Imagine Nosferatu, the second vampire ever seen on film, attacking one of Whitby’s lighthouses!
The film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was made in 1922, directed by F.W.Murnau. It was a unauthorised silent Germany Expressionist vampire film based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Changing Count Dracula’s name to Count Oriok and setting the tale in Germany were not enough to prevent Stoker’s widow from suing the filmmaker, and all copies of the film were ordered to be destroyed. But several prints survived and eventually the film became regarded as a masterpiece of early cinema in general and horror films in particular.
Quite why Nosferatu attacked Whitby’s lighthouse is unclear. The text on the back of the tin gives some context: “Unsated, the beast arose again from the bowels of the raging sea and plunge its fangs deep into the stones. A hideous sucking noise mingled with the screams of the desperate lighthouse. All Whitby shut its doors that night and prayed to speed the dawn.”
This metal tin is perfect for storing: jewellery, earbuds, make up, cards, coins and more …
